Shankar was a Dada of his colony he had vowed in the temple that he will not allow his son to grow up into another goonda like him. He challenged the destiny. He exchanged his own newly born son with the son of Ashok Babu, a great singer who lived in grand style. Dharam, Ashok Babus son was thus brought up in an environment of poverty crime and squalor. Shankar tried his best to cast him in his own mould and even after he went to jail for a long term, he had his henchmen to give him the tough training. Dharam learnt all the tricks. Once he met Ashok Babu by accident, he was keen to learn music. But he had to suppress his desire and follow the path laid for him by Shankar. Yet as fate would have it, Ranjit, Shankars real son could not follow the footsteps of Ashok Babu. All the efforts of Ashok Babu to train him to be a singer failed. Moreover the shadow of Shankars life fell on him. Mr. J. K. who knew the secret of exchange and who had his own grudge against Shankar succeeded in enticing Ranjit to his underworld activities. When grown-up Dharam met Ashok Babu again, the bond of music brought them further together and both Dharam and his sweetheart were introduced as artists by Ashok Babu with success. When Shankar come out of jail and went to see the stage show his joy knew no bounds. For he felt his mission had succeeded. Ranjit had become a signer like Ashok Babu. But little did he know that it was Dharam who had appeared on stage in the garb that it was Dharam who had appeared on stage in the garb of Ranjit. When the truth dawned on him he was bitter more so, when he found that Ranjit had become a smuggler and a henchman of J. K. God had failed Shankars plan.
